Stump grinding in Texas costs $75–$800 on ArborHub’s 2026 statewide base rates. Small stumps land at $75–$150. Medium is $150–$300. Large is $300–$500. Extra-large is $500–$800. Those are the same numbers used on city stump pages, before a local multiplier.
Grinding is not the same invoice as removal. Removal takes the tree down. Grinding chews the stump 6–12 inches below grade so you can sod, plant, or pour. Leave the stump and you keep a trip hazard, sprouts, and a termite/carpenter-ant target.

What actually moves the price
- Diameter at the cut. Price tracks the stump, not the tree that used to be there.
- Depth. 6 inches is lawn. 12 inches is closer to a patio or driveway.
- Roots in hard soil. Clay and caliche chew bits and time. Fort Worth city notes put that adder around 20–30% on grinding time.
- Haul-off. Chips left on site are cheaper than dump-and-spread.
When to grind
Grind when the stump is in a walk path, you want grass or a garden there, sprouts keep coming, or you are paving. You do not need to grind the same day as removal, but the crew is already there — combining the jobs is usually cheaper than a second mobilization.
