Oaks are the most expensive common tree to remove in Texas, and not because of height. Oak wood is dense, the limbs are heavy, and a live oak spreads wider than it is tall, so a 40-foot live oak can carry the weight of a much taller pine. That weight is what the crew has to control, one piece at a time.

The statewide removal bands are $150–$450 under 25 feet, $450–$1,200 at 25 to 50 feet, $1,200–$2,500 at 50 to 75 feet, and $2,500–$5,000 above 75 feet. An oak usually prices at the top of its band and often one band higher in practice, because the canopy is wider than the height suggests and the wood is heavy.

Why an oak costs more than a pine of the same height

Oak wilt changes the job

Oak wilt is a fungal disease that moves between oaks through root grafts and by sap beetles landing on fresh wounds. Texas A&M Forest Service and the Texas Oak Wilt partnership publish the handling rules; the practical ones for a removal are:

Oaks that are protected by city rule

Two of the cities ArborHub covers specifically protect oaks by size. Austin: heritage trees are 24 inches or more, and oaks are on the heritage species list, so removal needs a variance; 19 inches is the protected threshold that needs a permit. San Antonio: heritage trees are 24 inches or more, and oaks are included. Dallas protects trees at 8 inches but exempts single-family lots under 2 acres. Always check the city page for your city before you contract the work — every city has a permit note.

What to ask before an oak comes down

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to remove an oak tree in Texas?

The statewide band is $450–$1,200 for a 25- to 50-foot tree and $1,200–$2,500 for 50 to 75 feet, before the city factor. Oaks usually price at the top of the band because the canopy is wide and the wood is dense.

Is it cheaper to remove a dead oak?

Sometimes, but not reliably. A dead oak is lighter and has no canopy to protect, but it is also unpredictable: limbs can drop without warning and the trunk may not hold a tie-off. Crews often price dead oaks higher for the risk.

Do I need a permit to remove an oak in Austin or San Antonio?

In Austin, oaks 24 inches or more are heritage trees and removal needs a variance; 19 inches is the protected threshold needing a permit. In San Antonio, oaks at 24 inches or more are heritage trees. Both cities exempt property where a one- to three-family home is already built, but confirm with the city before scheduling.

Can I keep the oak firewood?

Only if the tree was healthy. In an oak wilt area, moving fresh oak wood is how the disease spreads; the Texas Oak Wilt guidance is to keep it on site, covered, or use seasoned bark-free wood.
